A Festival of Korean Dance 2022
London’s celebration of the rich and diverse Korean dance scene returns for a fifth year to The Place from 17 to 25 June 2022.
This year’s Festival offers audiences the chance to discover four female choreographers; Jinyeob Cha, Bora Kim, Soo Hyun Hwang and Yun Jung Lee, who bring powerful imagery and artistry to the stage to subvert ideas about our senses, how we communicate, and gender politics. Audiences can also hear insights directly from the artists about their work with our pre and post-show talks.
Bookers to live shows get exclusive access to two short dance films by acclaimed Korean choreographers; Bora Kim and Kyungeun Lee.
Programme
- Art Project BORA | MUAK - FRI 17 & SAT 18 JUN 19:30
Eight performers burst the confines of logic as they dismiss the notion that we watch dance and hear music exclusively. Using physical force, they dismantle a piano creating a live soundtrack through their movements, inviting the audience to see the sounds as a spectator and hear movement as a listener.
Running Time: 60 minutes
- Double Bill | Sense of Darkness & Tongue Gymnastics - TUE 21 JUN 19:30
This sensory double bill seeks to break down the boundary between performer and audience.
Soo Hyun Hwang | Sense of Darkness
With their eyes closed throughout the show, the performers in Sense of Darkness draw the audience into a world in which intricate movements and sounds are amplified.
Dance Project PPopKKi | Tongue Gymnastics
Yun Jung Lee’s compelling work Tongue Gymnastics for Dance Project PPopKKi dissolves social norms that relate to the tongue and explores the physical mechanism of the tongue root’s movement as a choreographic technique.
Running Time: 70 minutes
- collective A: MIIN-BODY TO BODY - SAT 24 & SUN 25 JUN 19:30
In this visually arresting performance, collective A’s critically acclaimed choreographer Cha Jinyeob examines perceptions of beauty and femininity beyond societal norms and traditions. Accompanied by a hypnotic soundscape created by two acclaimed musicians based in Seoul, Eun-yong Sim from Korean Avant-rock band Jambinai, and haihm, an electronic musician, with Korean Avant-rock band Jambinai, six female dancers flit between precise, discreet, feminine poses and aggressive, erratic movements to embody all aspects of a woman.
