Aritst Bios

In 2023, composer and pianist Yunho Jeong has built diverse musical activities. He won the first prize at Vienna International Music Competition and made his debut at Musikverein by performing his piece. He is currently writing a piece for Birmingham Contemporary Music Group commissioned by Tongyeong International Music Festival. His works have also been performed in a number of concerts and music festivals, including London Philharmonic Orchestra, Quatuor Lontano, Ensemble Marble, RCM New Perspectives, Les Musicales d'Assy Festival in France and the Great Mountain International Music Festival in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Born in Daegu, South Korea, Jeong started playing the piano at the age of five and made his debut when he was 12, performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto. His professional career as a composer started with his first composition recital at the age of 16, performing all his works himself. Entering Seoul National University, he studied with Shinuh Lee and moved to London in 2015 to study with Dai Fujikura at the Royal College of Music. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Composition under the supervision of Professor Philip Grange at University of Manchester. He was also given composition classes by Unsuk Chin, Peter Eötvös, Brett Dean and Michael Finnissy in music festivals, masterclasses and mentoring programmes.

As a pianist-composer, Jeong has also built intriguing activities such as premiering his own pieces himself or combining new music with classical repertoire. Since 2020 he has been the pianist in the Amandus Piano Quartet, for whom he wrote a new Piano Quartet which was premiered in 2021. From the 2021/22 season, he started a piano recital tour in South Korea with a creative programme combining works by Beethoven, Schubert, Kurtág, Takemitsu, Thomas Adès, Olivier Messiaen and his work as a continuous sequence under the theme ‘Nature, Spirit and Fantasy’ and the tour is continued during 2022/23 season.
