Programme Notes: The Symphony of Light and Shadow

In this world, there are countless colours, yet shadows are all the same shade of gray. Just as we are all individuals of different colours, perhaps the innermost part of us, like shadows, shares a common hue. These shadows tell the story of how we are all connected in some way. Shadows are born from light, and when radiant light shines upon them, the dark gray transforms into silver.

The gray that once coloured life was the hue of emptiness that devours the heart, the color of unbearable pain. But as moments of light accumulated, the gray was transformed into silver. What began as a sublimation of pain has evolved, and now we present you with various themes encountered in the grayness of time — the emotions of the land we stand on, its music, and the passage of nature’s time, all expressed through pure, original music.

Gray by Silver is a group consisting of piano, voice, Daegeum (Korean bamboo flute), and drums. Since 2018, they have been actively showcasing the new trends in Korean art music on a global stage. Just as all brilliant colors in the world cast the same gray shadows, Gray by Silver continues to create original pure music at the intersection of various genres like contemporary music, jazz, classical, and traditional folk music.

In 2022, they were invited to perform at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival and Aarhus Jazz Festival in Denmark, the Beyond Tokyo Showcase Festival in Japan, and the Guggenheim House in Kobe. In 2023, they were invited to perform at the 'Koza City Jazz Festival' in Okinawa and 'Asia Music Frontline,' and had a successful performance at the main indoor theater of the 'Colors of Ostrava,' one of Europe’s top 10 festivals. Following that, they received standing ovations at the Public Theater’s 'Joe’s Pub' and at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, New York, introducing the new wave of Korean music.

They also featured with the KBS Symphony Orchestra in the spin-off program 'Glacier Concert' from Korean National Broadcast's special project 'Glacier Concert,' bringing their original compositions to a broader audience in Korea. Furthermore, through various performances at platforms like Namsan Gugakdang, Sejong Center Chamber Hall, Sejong Dream Forest Arts Center, Ulsan Cultural Arts Center Grand Theater, The House Concert, they continue to meet domestic audiences without regard to the scale or genre, firmly establishing themselves as a representative group leading the new wave of contemporary Korean music.
