[Korean Culture Month] K-Pop meets Classical with MOO 廡

Whether you're a big fan of K-pop, Korean drama, Korean film and Korean children's music or are simply curious, this event will be a great opportunity for you. The quartet MOO 廡 has rearranged Korean songs and turned them into classical music pieces. Such crossover performances are rare to see so make sure you don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience Korean popular culture blended seamlessly with classical music.

The quartet's name is 廡 or 무 (the former symbol is old Korean, the latter modern Korean). These words are pronounced ‘MOO’, which means home. The name was chosen to create the idea of “inviting the audience to our music home”. They are formed of Susie Choi on Viola/Violin, Jonathan Moon on Piano, Oliver Clark on Cello and Jakub Rokosz on Percussion.

PERFORMERS

Susie Choi South Korean violist/violinist Susie Choi graduated from Yewon Arts School in 2015, Seoul Arts High School in 2018 and currently studies with Yuri Zhislin at the Royal College of Music London. She started her music life since when she was 4, as a violinist. She has awarded numerous competitions including: The 39th Kyunggi Concours String/Violin 1st prize, Voice 1st prize(2007), The 37th Music Education News Concours 2nd prize(2008), Seoul Art Music Competition 1st prize(2011), The 3rd Seoul Orchestra Competition 1st prize(2011), SeoKyung Music/Musical/Jazz Concours 1st prize(2011). Moreover, she performed Violin Concerto 1st Movement by G. V. Viotti with ‘Seoul Orchestra’ in 2011 at the Sowol art hall and proved her talent. In 2014, during when she was studying violin at the Yewon Arts School, she met viola by destiny. Starting from the 48th Music Education News Concours, she has awarded various competitions. Notable awards include the 15th Korean Chamber Orchestra National Music Competition 2nd prize (no winner for 1st prize) (2014), the 10th Koreana Chamber Orchestra Music Concours 1st prize(2014), the 8th Sejong Arts & Culture Foundation National Music Concours 1st prize(2014), Global Artist Music Competition 2nd prize(2017). She has performed as a solo violist and chamber musician in many concerts. Notable concerts include 5th CCM special collaboration concert at Stay.round.G in South Korea(2016), Easter Concert in Torch Trinity Graduate University(2016), Just Vivace Festival Concert at STX Resort Mungyeong in South Korea(2017), Modern chamber music collaboration performance with traditional Korean instruments arranged by Chia Ying Tu at the SNU(Seoul National University) Tuesday Concerts; 100th Memorial Special Concert for Debussy in South Korea(2018), String band concert at St. Paul Cathedral with Maestro Mark Messenger(2018), RCM Chamber Concert(2018), Kings College Modern Music Society Concert with Composer Silvina Milstein(2019), Ukraine Mission Fundraising Concert in London(2019). In 2018, she played Viola Concerto by C. Stamitz with ‘Bundang Chamber Orchestra’ with Maestro ChangWoo Kang at Seongnam Arts Center Concert Hall and showed her musical beauty. Recently, she finished her recital in Korea at Ensemble Lian, concert titled “Violist/Violinist Susie Choi’s House Concert <Variation>”. She had master classes with Choong-Jin Chang (principal viola of The Philadelphia Orchestra), Maxim Vengerov, Maxim Rysanov, Antonello Farulli and Jennifer Stumm. Recently, Royal College of Music(RCM), Royal Academy of Music(RAM) and Guildhall School of Music and Drama, offered a place for postgraduate course. Finally, she will continue her music journey at RCM. She has a deep understanding of artistic subjects, Her uniqueness can also be seen in acting (studied acting(Part-time) at Metfilm School), singing and composing/rearranging abilities. She is driven, passionate instrumentalist and artist.

Jonathan Moon is a pianist and an arranger from South Korea, currently in his second year of undergraduate degree of Music in Goldsmiths, University of London. While he started with classical piano at the age of 7, he decided to walk the path of jazz musician after realized his musical preferences in Korean Pop music. However, classical music is still in his interest, so make great influence on his music.Experience of playing various instruments such as violin, guitar and bass has made him to carry on his passion about composing and arraigning with style of both classic and jazz music. Now, studying under Sam Crowe, he pursuits to make own style of music in the middle classical and jazz music and to imply more creativity into his performance and arrangement.

Oliver Clark From the north of Scotland, Oliver Clark attended St Mary’s Music School before continuing his studies in Manchester at the Royal Northern College of Music. He now studies with German cellist Felix Schmidt at the Royal Academy of Music in London, partaking in his Master’s of Arts degree. Since commencing his degree, Oliver has also been appointed position of Junior Fellow and teaches weekly at the Royal Academy of Music. Oliver often works between London, Manchester, the North of Scotland and in venues across Portugal giving solo recitals and chamber concerts. Oliver frequently performs with his violinist duo partner Francisca de Brito, performing challenging repertoire which has now lead them to be sought after on an international platform, performing and competing across Portugal. For the six months, Oliver has also been working for the Algarve Symphony in the south of Portugal where he was appointed as Guest Principal Cellist. Additionally, Oliver is the Principal Cellist for the Manchester Video Game Orchestra: an orchestra which has gained a large following, catching the eye of celebrity composers and musicians such as Josh Mancell and Stuart Copeland, with whom Oliver has had the please to work alongside. Among chamber work, Oliver also has extensive experience in the recording industry and frequently works as a session musician. He has worked with Howard audio in Johannesburg South Africa, in addition to Amazon Prime this year to produce the sound track for a new television series.

Jakub Rokosz is London based drummer, percussionist, educator and producer. He graduated from the Guildhall School of Music studying jazz drums. Jakub has many years of performing different genres: jazz, funk, reggae, rock and world music.
