Haenyeo Exhibition: Korea Day in Lancashire
Discover Jeju's Living Heritage!
The Haenyeo are women of Korea’s Jeju Island whose job is to harvest seafood through a technique which involves diving without any breathing apparatus, called Muljil. Since the 19th century, the Haenyeo have played a major role in supporting the family unit and community, which not only helped improve the equality of the sexes but also formed a powerful female community in Jeju itself.
This exhibition explores the unique culture of the Jeju Haenyeo which through an ecological diving system values coexistence with nature, whilst also celebrating the independence of professional women within the community.
The exhibition will run between the 3 - 30 November 2022 and will include two special Haenyeo Talks on the lives of the Haenyeo on 5th and 6th November and a special Sharman Gut event on the 5th November.
There will also be additional Korean cultural events on 10th and 11th November including a Hanbok try-on event, Hangeul Calligraphy, and traditional Korean games as well.
