KOREAN SOUNDS SERIES 4 - Summer Aria
KOREAN SOUNDS is a vibrant and exhilarating music programme that began in February of this year and will run until December. With each series audiences will discover the rich and dynamic sounds of traditional, modern and contemporary Korea all interlaced with western classical music.
The evening will feature pieces presented by members of the Royal Opera House: Tenor, David Junghoon Kim and Bass David Shipley and Soprano Haegee Lee. Come and hear some of the most beautiful and popular Arias including a Korean Art Songs.
Korean Art Song or as it is known in Korea, Gagok refers to songs that were composed in the Western form shortly after Christian hymns had been introduced to Korea by missionaries at the end of the 19 century.

Bio – David Junghoon Kim
Korean tenor David Junghoon Kim studied at the Seoul National University, Graduating with a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance. Competition successes include First Prize in the Voci Verdant competition in Busseto, third prize in the International Singing Competition in Seoul, First Prize and Placido Domingo Prize in the Francisco Viñas competition in Barcelona, semi-finalist in the Concours de Reine Elizabeth in Brussels, Prince Rainier III Voice Master Prize in the Concours Monte-Carlo, First Prize and Audience Prize in the Toulouse International Singing Competition. Professional experience includes Rodolfo La bohème in Seoul and an Independence Commemoration Concert with Myung-Whun Chung at Sejong Art Center. He joined the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme in September 2015 and will make his Royal Opera debut as Venditore Il tabarro, followed by Arturo Lucia di Lammermoor and Ruiz Il trovatore. He will also cover Edgardo Lucia di Lammermoor.
Bio – David Shipley
David Shipley has performed as a soloist with such ensembles and conductors as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Monteverdi Choir, the Classical Opera Company, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir Andrew Davis and Sir Mark Elder, at venues including Paris’s Philharmonie, Barcelona’s L’Auditori, the Kölner Philharmonie, the Carnegie Hall, the Barbican and the Royal Albert Hall. He is currently on the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where his roles this season have included Arthur and Officer III The Lighthouse, Captain Eugene Onegin and High Priest of Baal Nabucco. In concert, Shipley has appeared regularly as a soloist with the Monteverdi Choir under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, including solos in Bach’s Mass in B Minor, in Monteverdi’s Orfeo at the BBC Proms, and in Monteverdi’s Vespers and Handel’s Dixit Dominus at the Salzburg Festival for the choir’s fiftieth anniversary. He is a Classical Opera Company Associate Artist
Bio - Haegee Lee
Korean soprano Haegee Lee studied at he Seoul National University, Graduating with a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance, and at Le conservatoire National de Région Pierre Barbizet Graduating with a Cycle de Spécialisé with first class honours. she studies with Mme Isabell VERNET. Competition successes include First Prize in the Concours de Bach in Marseille, seconde prize in The 1st Korean Classical Singers Association International Vocal Competition in Seoul. She has performed throughout Provence with highlight includes an L’EUROPE de la CULTURE Du Bel Canto à Giacomo PUCCINI Concert, and for 2 Semi-finalistes of concours Reine Elisabeth in Waterloo, The Concert Hymnes à Maria in Marseille, Une heure ensemble recital de Haegee LEE in St-Remy de Provence, and she sang first time performance Chanson de Gesha in conference of the Henri Tomasi du lyrisme méditerranéen à la conscience révoltée.
