Abel Quartet (Eunsol Youn - Violin, Wooil Lee - Violin, Sejune Kim - Viola, and Hyoung-Joon Jo - Cello) 

Members from the Korean National Gugak Centre (Jonggil Lee – Gayageum, Bangsil Lee – Geomumgo, Cho Yuhoe – Yanggeum, Jobyoung Chai – Danso)

The main theme of this concert series is ‘East Meets West’, presenting a rare opportunity to hear traditional Korean and classical music in one place. This programme will focus on string music by bringing together the ‘Abel Quartet’ and four performers from ‘The Korean National Gugak Centre’, one of the great arts institutions of Korea whose work oversees a thousand years of musical history.

 Abel Quartet 

The Abel Quartet was formed in 2013 while its members were studying in Munich, Germany. They studied under Prof. Christoph Poppen and Prof. Hariolf Schlichtig who were both former members of the Cherubini Quartet. Since Abel’s formation notable highlights include being awarded 2nd Prize at the international August-Everding-Competition in 2014, 1st prize at the Joseph Haydn International Chamber Music competition and 2nd prize and the audience prize at the Lyon International Chamber Music Competition, 2015. Most recently Abel won 1st prize at the 5th Artsylvia Chamber Music Audition, 2016.

The National Gugak Centre 

The Korean National Gugak Centre is a culture and arts institute that preserves and promotes over a thousand years of tradition and history. They have continued to pass down Korea’s traditions and artistic skills whilst at the sometime preserving a variety of culture and art resources including their nation’s unique court music, Pungryu and Korean classical music.
