Korean Sounds - East Meets West: Series 2
KOREAN SOUNDS is a vibrant and exhilarating music programme created by the Korean Cultural Centre UK. This newly developed concert series began in February 2016 and will run until December with a rich and dynamic programme of traditional, modern and contemporary Korean music as well as the Western classical music.
KOREAN SOUNDS series will take place every two months at Hall 2, Kings Place, London. This second concert of the Korean Sounds series features two talented young artists, Jason Bae (piano) and Sulki Yu (violin), performing together with members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Artists' Biographies
Violinist Sulki Yu enjoys a busy career as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral leader. A prize-winner of the 2006 Yehudi Menuhin and 2007 Szigeti-Hubay International Violin competitions, Sulki studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with full scholarships under David Takeno. She has appeared as a soloist with many prestigious orchestras, made debut recitals at Wigmore Hall and Southbank Centre to critical acclaim and performed at the BBC Radio 3. A passionate chamber musician, she has been invited to many international chamber music festivals where she has shared the stage with Dong-Suk Kang and Gordon Nikolitch amongst others. In 2009, she formed the Fournier Trio. The trio were awarded the 2013 Parkhouse Award and were winners of the Second prize and Audience prize at the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition. Sulki currently serves as the Principal First Violin at the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and plays on a beautiful Niccolo Gagliano violin on loan to her.
New Zealand pianist, Jason Bae was born in Daejeon, South Korea in 1991. At the age of twelve, he made his concerto debut with Auckland Symphony Orchestra. Since then, he has performed with Auckland Philharmonia, New Zealand National Youth Symphony, Queensland Symphony and Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. He has also given recitals in the UK, France, the USA, and Australia. Jason was awarded 1st Prize in the 2008 Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition in New York. The following year he won 2nd prize at the 2009 Lev Vlassenko International Piano Competition in Brisbane and was selected as the New Zealand Young Performer of the Year. In 2013 he was awarded 1st Prize in the 2013 New Zealand Inaugural Wallace Piano Competition. Last year, he received his Master of Arts in piano performance with the highest distinction award, DipRAM, from the Royal Academy of Music in London under the tutelage of Christopher Elton and Joanna MacGregor. Jason is New Zealand’s first Young Steinway Artist since 2012.
Known as the Nation’s Favourite and one of the finest Orchestras in the world, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) has toured globally, performing in the most prestigious concert venues with some of the greatest soloists and conductors of our time. Under the inspiring leadership of Principal Conductor Charles Dutoit, the RPO has often received praise for delivering the highest quality as well as variety of music. In October 2015, whilst performing the opera The Trojans in Geneva, five like-minded members of the RPO came together with their love for playing chamber music. These members have travelled from all over the world: Sulki Yu from South Korea, Shana Douglas from the US, Michelle Bruil from the Netherlands, Chian Lim from Singapore and Roberto Sorrentino from the UK. Thus the ‘Odyssey Ensemble’ was created, depicting the individual Odysseys of the members and their harmonious formation to produce beautiful chamber music.
