This year, Seollal falls on January 29. Seollal is a time for Koreans to return to their hometowns to pay respect to their ancestors, as well as catch up with family members. During Seollal, Koreans usually perform ancestral rites, play folk games, eat traditional foods, listen to stories and talk well into the night. Read on to discover how Koreans celebrate Seollal.

To commemorate Seollal, we are holding a special event at the KCCUK and we invite you to join us and experience Korea with our Korean Culture Box (Sarangbang, Anbang and Hanbok).

What is Sarangbang?

In traditional society, sarangbang is a place where the men of the house stayed to study and greet their guests. Inside the sarangbang, there was munbangsawoo, which represents the brush, ink, paper, and inkstone, and seoan, a small wooden table for reading, that seonbi (Joseon Dynasty Scholars) used.

What is Anbang?

Anchae is the space for women. Outsiders could not enter the anbang, and even the men in the family could not go in and out of the anbang freely. For this reason, an anbang was built in the most inner part of the house where it could not be seen from the outside or from the main gate. Anchae was the place where the lady of the house, who took care of the entire housekeeping, prepared meals, clothing and blankets for her family. It was also a place for mothers to nurture their children.

What is Hanbok?

The traditional clothing of Korea is called hanbok. Hanbok for men included a pair of trousers and a top, and Hanbok for women included a skirt and a top. Since Korea has four distinct seasons, Hanboks are not just made in a variety of colours but also made to suit the temperature of each season.
