What is Minhwa?

Minhwa, meaning ’painting of the people‘ or ’popular painting‘ offers a vibrant window into traditional Korean life. These folk paintings portray the simple and unaffected daily lives of ordinary people. An invaluable part of Korea’s cultural heritage, folk paintings illustrate the mythology, religion, and mindset of the Korean people.

Minhwa is free from the stereotypical drawing of the old classics as they were predominantly created by nonprofessional painters. Therefore Minhwa is liberal and free-spirited in its delivery, whilst being fairly consistent in structure, composition and presentation.

By drawing Minhwa, Korean folk paintings, this event explores the history of Korean art and traditional Korean culture, while celebrating Korean craft in a fun event.
