The Korean Cultural Centre UK is pleased to present a special three-week workshop introducing the 12-string gayageum, Korea’s iconic traditional zither.

Discover the harmony of Korean tradition and modern pop through this hands-on course, designed for both complete beginners and K-pop enthusiasts alike. Led by traditional musician Seoyoung Park, the workshop invites participants to experience Korean music through plucked strings, rhythm, and melody.

Every Wednesday, from 28 May to 11 June 2025 (3 sessions)
🕖 Time: 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM
📍 Venue: Korean Cultural Centre UK
🎵 Instructor: Seoyoung Park (Traditional Gayageum Musician)
👥 Participants: Maximum 15 people (application required)
💷 Fee: Free of charge


🎯 Please Note:

  • This is a three-week course, and we kindly ask applicants to register only if they are able to attend all sessions.
  • A gayageum will be provided for each participant during the workshop.
  • Instruction will be conducted in English.
  • Participants with poor attendance may be ineligible for future KCCUK workshops and programmes.
  • Confirmation emails will be sent to selected participants on 24 May 2025.

🎼 3-Week Gayageum Workshop Programme


W1 – My Friend Gayageum

Introduction to the 12-string gayageum (history, structure, sound)
Learning posture and basic techniques (plucking, striking, etc.)
Simple rhythm exercises through the Korean folk song “Arirang”


W2 – Tradition Meets K-pop

Review of basic techniques
Learning IU’s “Through the Night” (아이유 – 밤편지) using open strings
Preparing for the group performance in Week 3


W3 – All Together

Final practice of the selected piece
Team rehearsals and group performance
Recap of workshop content and self-practice tips
Optional Q&A and commemorative photo session
