Won Il's Gugak Masterclass
A special talk and workshop with Won Il ahead of Dionysus Robot at Southbank Centre
As part of the 2025 K-Music Festival, the Korean Cultural Centre UK is delighted to present a special masterclass with Won Il — one of Korea’s most acclaimed composers and artistic directors.
The event will take place on Thursday 13 November, the day before his groundbreaking performance Dionysus Robot at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre, on Friday 14 November.
During the masterclass, Won Il will give a lecture on traditional Korean music (Gugak) and his creative process, accompanied by live instrumental demonstrations and short performances by musicians featured in Dionysus Robot. Participants will gain rare insight into his bold, interdisciplinary artistry, which reimagines tradition through digital and multimedia innovation.
- About Won Il
Former Artistic Director of the National Orchestra of Korea and Music Director for the 2018 Winter Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Won Il has long been at the forefront of Korea’s contemporary music scene. His creative direction of JAMBINAI’s iconic performance at the Closing Ceremony remains one of his most memorable achievements. - Dionysus Robot
You can then experience Won Il’s visionary work Dionysus Robot in full on Friday 14 November at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre. In this production, he transforms the stage into a living gut (ritual) — merging traditional Korean and electronic instruments with striking visuals to create a hypnotic, multi-sensory experience where chaos and control, the sacred and the synthetic collide in breathtaking harmony.
A special prize draw will also be held, offering attendees the chance to win two complimentary tickets to Dionysus Robot.
