Why the English Premier League is full of betting advertisements? Sports and betting, their uneasy companion

9 April 2022 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. (BST) / 18:00 p.m.-19:00 p.m. (KST)

Sports today, especially football, are very tightly linked with betting. Countless matches are commercialized as bets, football fields are used as betting billboards, and clubs and leagues receive financial support from betting companies. However, excessive linkage with betting that causes various social problems such as addiction also threatens sports' social value and legitimacy. Through the seminar, we discuss how sports betting is changing the way sports are organized and consumed today by examining the history of sports betting, the political economy of legalization of betting, and the characteristics of transnational betting markets.
