In recent years, Korea has become one of the largest content providers for global subscription video on demand (SVOD) services. Especially, Korean dramas with dystopian narratives and social commentary have attracted global audiences.

This lecture advances the understanding of how genres operate with, and under, Netflix’s transnationalism, by examining the textual characteristics of Netflix Original K-Dramas. Selected examples of Netflix Originals from 2020 to 2022 will be used to illuminate how the characteristics of transnationalisation are the consequences of interplay between Netflix’s content strategy, cultural specificities and structural particularities of Korean society and its media industry.
