THE WINNER OF KCCUK OPEN CALL YVA JUNG: MOONING MONDAY

23 Apr 2015 - midnight

Venue:

Korean Cultural Centre UK

Visual Arts

Born in Seoul in 1983, Yva Jung lives and works in London. She is a recipient of International Fellowship and grants including the Jerome Foundation (2011) and Arts Council Korea (2011, 2008). Her previous exhibitions include: CAFAM Biennale, CAFA Art Museum (China, 2014), Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival (UK, 2013), Taipei Contemporary Art Center (Taiwan, 2013), Sangsangmadang Gallery (South Korea, 2011), and Soho20 Gallery (USA, 2009). As the winner of the KCCUK ‘2015 Spring Open Call’, Jung will present her first ever solo show Mooning Monday (23 April – 23 May, 2015) where she will play with the visual motif that is as mundane as the moon and as ordinary as Monday. She will be exhibiting a body of videos, sculptures and photography which won’t be displayed as fragmented, individual pieces but more as a coherent body of work. Jonathan Watkins (Director of Ikon gallery), Fatos Ustek (Fig-2 curator) and Do Ho Suh (artist) applauded all the applicants for the strengths of their artistic practices. However the jury decided to give a solo exhibition opportunity to Yva Jung in recognition of her ambitious and thorough articulation of her practice and found her humorous and playful sensibility intriguing. The jury unanimously saw her potential to create an exciting solo show which will convey a sense of time that is both topical and compelling. Another shortlisted artist was Shinwook Kim whose series of photographic/video works demonstrated the potential to be developed into a solo show. The jury have asked him to submit an additional proposal and should the jury decide to support his proposal, the KCCUK will host his solo show this coming August. The KCC Open Call is an annual exhibition programme at the Korean Cultural Centre UK that defines itself as a springboard for the emerging artists of Korean origin whose opportunities of presenting their practices are becoming rare in the competitive UK art scene. In heightening the attention drawn to UK-based Korean artists through individual and collaborative works, the programme is open to various forms of creative artistic expression and communication.
