Early Korean Cinema: Lost Films from the Japanese Colonial Period

Tuition + Patriots Day in Joseon

26 Feb 2019 - 8:30pm

Venue:

BFI Southbank

Film

Early Korean Cinema

Tuition follows the trials and tribulations of schoolboy Yeong-dal as he struggles to find the money to pay for his education. The child’s viewpoint of economic hardship and the film’s upbeat ending makes this film a charming addition to the series. Facing expulsion for failure to pay his fees, the young protagonist decides to undertake an arduous journey to ask his grandmother for financial help.

Accompanying this film is a colonial newsreel illustrating the day-to-day pro-Japanese propaganda seen throughout this period.
