In a Kafka-esque city of the future, Shin-dong is forced to sublet spaces in his tiny apartment. It means he has to share space in every aspect of his daily life. Delusion and despair soon kick in, reflecting the general woes of contemporary Korea’s alienated, over-medicated urban population. At first whimsically funny – and not a little weird – Yoon Eun-Kyung’s dystopia eventually locates its heart of darkness, finding room for hermetically sealed bleakness.
