Traditional Korean Folk Games

The Korean Cultural Centre UK (KCCUK) is thrilled to announce the launch of its ‘Traditional Korean Folk Games’ series, a key part of the ‘K-Creative Sessions” library project, commencing Friday, March 28th, 2025. This exciting initiative offers the British public a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant world of Korean traditional folk games, which have captured global attention following their appearance in the popular series, ‘Squid Game’.
“A joyful festival filled with fun games is the cultural heritage of a new future,” stated Director Seunghye Sun of the KCCUK. “We hope the laughter of those enjoying Korean games in the UK is filled with happiness. We are delighted to practice everyday Korean aesthetics and friendly cultural diplomacy, bringing these rich traditions to a wider audience.”
More than just a playful pastime, ‘Traditional Korean Folk Games’ offers engaging workshops designed to creatively explore the historical and cultural significance embedded within each game. Throughout March, April, and May, participants will delve into the intricacies of Ttakji-chigi (slapping paper tiles) and Jegichagi (shuttlecock kicking), Yutnori (Yut game), and Cheongsachorong (traditional Korean lanterns). Each session, led by expert instructor Hyekyung Choi, will provide insights into the fascinating stories behind these games, fostering a deeper understanding of their cultural context.
Participants will have the chance to create their own versions of these traditional games and experience the joy of playing them together. Instructor Choi will guide attendees through the historical and cultural significance of each game, emphasising their role as symbols of Korean heritage.
The KCCUK is committed to promoting Korean traditional culture and history through innovative and engaging events. The ‘K-Creative Sessions’ are a testament to this commitment, offering a platform for cultural exchange and fostering closer connections between the UK and Korea.
