The Korean Cultural Centre UK to Host a Special Screening of A Resistance in London to Mark the 80th Anniversary of Korean Liberation

The Korean Cultural Centre UK(KCCUK) will host a special screening of A Resistance in London at the KCCUK on Wednesday, 26 February to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Korean Liberation and the March 1st Independence Movement.

Director Seunghye Sun remarked, “2025 marks the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation, a poignant reminder of the indomitable spirit and courage of the Korean people who persevered through turbulent times. Overcoming adversity is never easy, but the hope that reignites light lies at the heart of Korean culture.”

This special screening is designed to reflect on the significance of the March 1st Movement and honour the dedication of those who fought for Korea’s independence.

Released in 2019, A Resistance portrays the year-long struggle of Yu Gwan-sun, a real-life freedom fighter imprisoned in Seodaemun Prison following the March 1st protests against Japanese colonial rule in 1919. The film not only recounts Yu’s personal story but also sheds light on the collective experiences of countless female independence fighters, including historical figures such as Kwon Ae-ra, Yu’s senior at Ewha School.

The Korean Cultural Centre UK will continue to commemorate significant milestones in Korean history. In June, the KCCUK will host a screening marking the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, followed by a screening in August to celebrate Liberation Day. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to share the profound meaning of Korean liberation and engage UK audiences through a diverse range of cultural events throughout the year.
