Korean Cultural Centre UK Brings Together Community and Students to Support Korean Women Footballers in Birmingham
The Korean Cultural Centre UK (KCCUK) held a special community support event in Birmingham on 16 November, where around 50 Korean residents and students gathered to cheer on South Korean women’s national football players Ji So-yun and Lee Geum-min.
Participants watched the league match between Birmingham City Women FCand Portsmouth Womenat St Andrew’s Knighthead Park, supporting the Korean players as they took to the pitch in the UK.
Dr Seunghye Sun, Director of the Korean Cultural Centre UK, reflected on the significance of the event: “Coming together to support Korean women footballers playing in the UK is a shared cultural experience of passion and connection.The dedication shown by Ji So-yun, Lee Geum-min and their teammates symbolises the strength of Korean women’s sports on the world stage.
It was deeply meaningful to encourage this moment alongside members of the Korean community and students. Going forward, the KCCUK will continue to highlight the power and inspiration of women’s sports as part of our cultural outreach.”
During the match, Ji So-yun played a full 90 minutes, leading the midfield with her trademark composure, while Lee Geum-min, brought on in the second half, delivered a sharp assist that created a key scoring opportunity.
Strong Community Spirit Inside the Stadium
Carrying Korean flags prepared by the KCCUK, participants filled the stands with enthusiastic chants of “Come on, Korea!”, creating a bright and energetic atmosphere. Many attendees brought handmade banners and signs, and Korean-language cheers echoed throughout the stadium.
One student participant shared: “It was incredibly moving to wave the Korean flag together overseas. Seeing the players up close made me want to support them even more.”
Another attendee added: “Shouting Korean chants helped us feel instantly connected — even with people we had never met before. It was an unforgettable moment during my time in the UK.”

The Korean Cultural Centre UK will continue to organise on-site support events for South Korean women footballers active in the UK, while expanding cultural exchange through women’s sports and promoting the global profile of Korean sport.
