K-Traditional Music Workshop
The Korean Cultural Centre UK will host a special K-Traditional Music Workshop Series every Wednesday from 30 April to 11 June 2025, in conjunction with the National Science Museum of Korea’s first overseas special exhibition celebrating its 80th anniversary, ‘Soundwaves of Science: Exploring the Science of Music’
The workshop series offers London audiences a rare opportunity to experience the beauty of Korean traditional music and instruments while exploring the scientific principles behind their sound. Participants will be invited to engage directly with Korean aesthetics by learning how traditional craftsmanship and acoustic science come together in Korea’s musical heritage.
Director Seunghye Sun highlighted the significance of the programme, stating:
“We have prepared a unique hands-on workshop that allows participants in the UK to learn Korean traditional instruments and understand Korean aesthetics through science. By connecting tradition with scientific principles, this programme offers a vivid and deeply personal encounter with Korean beauty. Artistic experiences transcend borders; when people from different cultural backgrounds directly engage with another culture’s art, that experience becomes their own, creating empathy and opening the door to emotional resonance. Cultural diplomacy begins with aesthetic experience.”
The workshops focus on two iconic Korean instruments—the danso (bamboo flute) and the gayageum (12-string zither). Participants will learn to play both Korean folk songs and popular K-POP melodies, experiencing how traditional and contemporary Korean music blend into a dynamic and colourful soundscape. A special segment will also introduce the scientific principles behind sound production, enabling participants to explore the physics hidden inside music.
Led by professional instructors, the sessions are designed for complete beginners. The programme is accessible to anyone interested in Korean culture, music, or hands-on creative experiences, regardless of prior musical background.
Through this workshop series, the Korean Cultural Centre UK hopes to further promote the richness and depth of Korean culture in the UK and strengthen cultural exchange and engagement with local audiences.
